Keys to a New Home

Ready to Move: 5 Things to Add to Your New Home Checklist

Are you feeling overwhelmed by your move?

Moving can be one of the most stressful life events.

With all of the chaos that comes with finding a new place and actually moving yourself and your family into it, wouldn’t you jump at the chance to make it easier?

We’ve compiled a new home checklist to help you out. Read on to learn about the 5 things you absolutely should do when you move!

1. Tour Your New Home While It’s Still Empty

Before you bring over all your belongings, go through the house while it’s empty.

While this may seem redundant after the home is yours, it may save you a headache down the road. After all, you can use it as an opportunity to take note of any repairs that need to be made.

Or, should the previous owners have failed to meet any conditions agreed upon in your contract, you can call your realtor.

2. Learn About Your Moving Company

If you’re one of the 19% of people using a professional moving company, you’re going to want to select one that best fits your needs.

Many moving companies have lists of items they will not allow. These items usually include hazardous items, such as propane tanks, but each company varies in its requirements.

If you’re looking to save some money, moving companies will often give you a cheaper price if you move on a weekday. Consider asking yours if they have deals like this.

3. Label Your Boxes

Making your unpacking process easier actually begins while you’re packing!

As you sort your items into boxes, take out a marker and note the room in which the items in each box go. This will make it easier for you to find your belongings later, when the boxes are all sealed up and otherwise look the same!

If you have any fragile items, make a note of that on the box as well. This will remind everyone who handles these items to be more careful.

4. Get Your Utilities Set Up

Before you move in, make sure you set up your energy, water, and internet. If possible, schedule all of these services to begin on the day of your move-in so you experience as little interruption to your regular life as possible.

If applicable, purchase renter’s insurance as well.

5. Clean

Once everything is out of the old house, clean it to make it welcoming to the new owners.

And when you get into your new house, clean it, too!

One Last Thing For Your New Home Checklist

The most important item on your new home checklist is safety.

As COVID-19 is spreading, it is becoming more essential than ever to make sure you know your safe moving tips. This will help you transition while maintaining your health!
