There’s Snow Place Like Home! 5 Winter Preparation Tips for Your Home

Cold weather is on the way whether we like it or not. The moment the first leaf falls to the ground, a chain reaction starts that eventually leads to winter. So, put away your flower pots and rake, and get that shovel out of storage.

Homeowners need to take more winter preparation steps than that, though, to ensure their home is ready for the cold weather. Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about cold weather prep and how to prepare your house for winter.

1. Inspect Your Roof

Climb up onto your roof before the snow flies to inspect your shingles. The last thing you’ll want to deal with amidst a blizzard or in the spring are leaks from loose or damaged shingles. Look for missing granules or signs that the shingles are curling.

Inspect along the flashing to ensure it’s completely sealed. You should be inspecting the flashing annually to make sure it’s not loose after a summer storm.

Rake or blow off any stray leaves or pine needles that can hold moisture, too.

2. Prep Your Heater

Call a technician to inspect your furnace or heat pump before you turn it on for the season. You can also do this yourself if you know what you’re doing or what to look for. You’ll want to ensure your heating system is clean and in working condition so it can do its job efficiently all winter long.

If you’re replacing your heating system this year, consider a programmable thermostat instead. They’re more money upfront, but you’ll notice a return on your investment with the energy you’ll save.

3. Install Weatherstripping

Weatherstripping is the process of sealing the openings to your home. Most people will seal their doors and windows to keep the cold air and wetness out of their homes.

Install weatherstripping or caulking if the gaps between your siding and window or door frames are bigger than a nickel’s width.

Seal every nook and cranny around your doors and windows. You might also consider sealing any access points for your attic.

4. Clean the Gutters

Autumn leaves are beautiful on the ground but can wreak havoc on your home if they lodge themselves in your gutters. If leaves or other debris aren’t cleaned from the gutters, they can cause a leaky roof. This can lead to water damage on both the interior and exterior of your home and significant repair bills.

Gutters full of gunk are also the perfect nesting space for pests and rodents.

5. Adjust Your Ceiling Fan

If you have ceiling fans in your home, adjust the direction the blades turn.

Since hot air rises, your blades should move in a clockwise direction to push the warm air back down to your room. This small, simple switch may help you save money on your energy bills this winter.
